Live audience voting for national television. Figures measured against the process this platform replaced, twelve weeks after full rollout.
The problem
Traffic is not a curve, it is a wall. Nothing happens, the host says 'voting is open', and hundreds of thousands of SMS and voice votes arrive at once. A vote that lands late is a vote that does not count.
The approach
Acknowledge fast, process later. Laravel queues and worker pools take votes off the request path immediately, and aggregation is kept well away from ingestion.
The build
AWS capacity is scaled before each broadcast against expected peak rather than normal traffic, and MySQL is tuned for write-heavy bursts.
Because the programme is live, the whole design assumes there is no chance to replay anything after the window closes.
